A Brief Introduction to Thalassotherapy
Thalassotherapy is an ancient healing treatment dating back 5000 years, and is based on, the now proven scientific fact of, the natural healing properties of seawater. The word itself was coined in 19th century France from the Greek "thalassa" meaning sea and "therapeia" meaning healing. In the mid 1800’s royalty and the rich & famous would travel to France to ‘take to the waters’ as it was known, experiencing a warmed ocean water bath with raw seaweed.  Today, thalassotherapy is used as an alternative treatment for medical conditions around the world treating, arthritis, psoriasis & eczema and has become a popular tourist attraction for relaxation and stress reduction as well as a favorite method of anti-aging healing by maintaining healthy circulation in the body.

How It Works...
Thalassotherapy’s main objective is to increase blood circulation that is reduced by the depletion of vital minerals caused by stress, poor diet, and pollution. Since the chemical make-up of seawater is so similar to that of human blood, immersions in water when heated to body temperature results in trace minerals and ions such as iron, magnesium, potassium, and calcium sulphates to be absorbed directly by the skin into the bloodstream. This not only increases blood circulation but has beneficial effects upon the pores of the skin such as toning and moisturizing. Thalassotherapy also helps to detoxify and nourish the body through our largest organ, our skin, as well as to relax and bring the body in homeostasis or balance.

The Benefits of Thalassotherapy...
Increasingly, people are turning to thalassotherapy for its anti-aging treatments. It has become a favourite treatment for cellulite reduction both for its effectiveness as well as its calming approach. The causes of cellulite are generally attributed to poor blood circulation and a build-up of toxins, so an overall thalassotherapy treatment can release these agents while providing other benefits. Some of these benefits of thalassotherapy are muscle toning, skin cleansing, weight loss aided by improved metabolism, improved cardiovascular functioning, boosting of the immune system, improvement of sleep quality, relief of the symptoms of eczema, psoriasis, back and muscular pain, and stress.

"I have been in the horse industry my whole life, riding professionally, but had taken a year off to do some intense training with my main show horse, Shadow.  Just when things were looking like we had a great chance to win everything this year my horse had been kicked very hard in the chest right above his breast, with the impact of the kick his chest had been slip open about 5 inch. and about 1 inch. deep, the impact also left my horses right breast to hand about 3-4 inch. lower than normal.  The vet had to rush out to the stable to sedate him and let us know what the next step was, informing use he may need to do reconstructing surgery on the muscle and stitch him up, he then pulled me aside to let me know that I would not be showing this season and with the nerve damage there was a possibility that Shadow would be left with a touch of a limp for the rest of his life...The vet had stitched him up for the night and gave us a date for three days later to see if the reconstructing surgery would need to be done, but prescribed me to clean the wound with a damp cloth soaked in epsom salts to keep infection out.
I went home that night and thought of Rod and Ria and all the things that I had learnt from them about the healing powers of seaweeds.  Then I started to think of all the skin disorders that I had witnessed disappear due to the use of sea weeds, once I had put two and two together I thought to myself it was worth a shot to put seaweed to the ultimate test!  The next day I went to the stable to start my new daily ritual of cleaning my horses wound, but instead of using a 50% epsom salts 50% water mix, I used a 25% raw seaweed soak and 75% water mix.  The next day when I had gone back I had noticed the muscle was not as abnormally low.  After doing my ritual on my horse twice daily for three days the vet came back for a check up and was amazed and said that Shadow would not need the surgery and also informed us the muscle was back to normal, other then it being a bit sore for shadow.  The vet then asked me what I had been doing, because there was no way it should have healed that fast.  I didn’t want to tell him just yet that I was secretly using seaweeds, as he might have thought I was a little weird, like many other people thought I was.  One week and a half later the vet returned to see how the stitches were doing, I explained how I thought they were ready to be removed, before seeing Shadow he laughed at me and said “Oh Tiffany, I told you not to expect too much for this season.” inside my head I laughed and could not wait to see his reaction!  When we finally got to Shadow the vets mouth must have hit the floor, because I was right, Shadows stitches were indeed ready to be removed!  It has now been a month and two weeks since the incident and Shadow has been working even better than before, and if it was not for me not expecting to go to the first show of our show season, Shadow and I would have went and beat our competitors for sure! - Tiffany, Licensed Esthetician, Horse Lover
